I have never escaped from my responsibility. During the past few weeks, I have been with my mother and my family and my loved ones to show support and care and at the same time to have them support and care for me.

I admit that most of the photos being circulated on the Internet were taken by me. But these photos are very private and have not been shown to people and are never intended to be shown to anyone. These photos were stolen from me illegally and distributed without my consent.

There is no doubt whoever obtained these photos have them uploaded on the Internet with malicious and deliberate intent. This matter has deteriorated to the extent that society as a whole has been affected by this. In this regard, I am deeply saddened. I would like now to apologize to all the people for all the suffering that has been caused and the problems that have arisen from this. I would like to apologize to all the ladies and to all their families for any harm or hurt that they have been feeling. I am sorry. I would like to also apologize to my mother and my father for the pain and suffering I have caused them during the past few weeks. Most importantly, I would like to say sorry to all the people of Hong Kong. I give my apology sincerely to you all, unreservedly and with my heart.

I know young people in Hong Kong look up to many figures in our society. And in this regard, I have failed. I failed as a role model. However, I wish this matter will teach everyone a lesson. 朱彤，毕业于北京外交学院，后考入北京外国语大学联合国译员培训班，1990年进入外交部翻译室，为国家领导人做翻译工作，现为翻译室培训处副处长。她在重大政治活动中，特别是在朱镕基就任总理的首次记者招待会上，以其精湛的翻译才华，给人留下深刻而美好的印象。

1999年5月19日下午，我去外交学院看望朋友，刚好得到一个消息——朱彤当天晚上要在外交学院搞讲座，真是“踏破铁蹄无觅处，得来全不费功夫”。朱彤对媒体一直采取了绝对的冷调，从来不接受任何一家媒体的专访，以致我们先后两次的请求都遭到了拒绝。我不想放过这个机会，于是连饭也没吃，把外套卷进包里，拿了一个本子在手中，急急忙忙走进了即将进行讲座的教室。7点钟，教室内外已经水泄不通了，仅能容纳300人的教室来了足有800人。许多学生干脆站在教室外面的窗台上。

朱彤来了。我得以近距离地观看这位风云人物——一身咖啡色的套裙，衬托出她白皙的肤色，显得很飒爽。

“我1990年离开外交学院，到现在已经9年了，一直想找个机会和大家谈一谈，我对外交学院是怀着深厚的感情的。她培养了我，为我以后的工作打下了比较好的基础，我特别想借此机会向母校的老师表示自己的感激之情？”几句漂亮、得体的开场白后，她的讲座在一片热烈的掌声中开始了。

硬着头皮学政策她说，作为一名外交翻译，具备良好的政治、政策水平是极其重要的。作为一个外交翻译和一般翻译的最大不同之处就是——外交翻译在政治、政策方面有非常高的要求，就是说，作为外交翻译注定要通过口和笔把国家的方针政策非常准确达意地传达出去，让别人了解。如果光从字面上理解这些政策、方针、内容是不够的，必须从政治高度理解其实质，才能够掌握精神。

她刚到翻译室时，最大的不适应就是政治学习。开始也觉得挺烦，每天都要学文件、读报告，挺抵触的。那时她便带一本英文杂志到会场，上面讲，她在下面看别的书。

后来，翻译室的老同志提出政治学习的重要性——外交翻译有的时候有把关的作用。于是，她才开始重视这一点，才知道这对于她有多重要。

举例说，江主席曾经提出过一个16字方针：“增加信任，减少麻烦，发展合作，不搞对抗。”在一段时间里，每次谈中美关系都要提16字方针，有的领导人也提到了16字方针，个别时候就会不小心少说一个，这时候，就要翻译来补全。

克林顿总统去年访华，在上海有一个“三不承诺”。他提出：“不支持搞两个中国、一中一台；不支持台湾独立，不支持台湾加入任何国际组织。”朱彤有一次给一个部领导作翻译时，他提到“三不承诺”，说的是“不支持搞两个中国；不支持一中一台；不支持台湾独立”。很明显，落下了一条。她于是根据自己的记忆补全了。

朱彤说她也有教训：1995年，钱副总理兼外长到纽约，按照惯例，都要在中美关系委员会的午宴上作演讲，回答问题。当时最热门的话题是港英政府的选举。中英在香港问题上的合作不是那么顺利，而选举是港英政府单方面搞的。钱副总理讲话特别言简意赅，不多说一个字，你如果不了解背景，就不好理解。钱副总理讲，他们的选举是在“量体裁衣”，她当时听了一想，“量体裁衣？难道不应该吗？”于是有点发懵。钱副总理一下子注意到了她的窘迫，就给她解释说：“港英政府按照他们的尺寸重新划分了选区，这样有利于他们支持的人当选。”这样一解释，就跟字面上理解的“量体裁衣”是两码事儿了。后来，她就按照这个意思翻了，不过，确实出了一身冷汗。为了能够具备良好的政治、政策水平，她和同事经常在翻译室进行这方面的训练，经常看人民日报、政府工作报告等，不光是看，还要进行中英文的互译。

1000个小时突破听力大关说起业务，她强调了英语学习中的“死角”——听力。英文中的听力是很困难的。我们毕竟是生活在一个中文的环境中，听力要提高只有多听。她讲到她在联合国译训班上学时，她的老师讲过“同声传译”（也就是边看英文边从嘴里出中文）的办法，这样要练1000个小时。起初练时没觉得有什么进展，丧失了信心。

可等你练到了1000小时时，你就会有质的飞跃了。这不像我们听英文广播，大概听懂了就行了，这远远不够，首先是强度上不够，听懂了还必须要说出来。所以她后来培训新同志时，就给他们讲"1000个小时"，他们听起来很可怕，可实际上太有价值了。在联合国讲话的，哪里人都有，像什么印度人、非洲人、东南亚人……如果不进行这种强化训练，有了对语音的敏锐的把握程度，今后的工作将会很糟糕。

良好的基础加上吃苦的精神，成功就不会太遥远了。

好的翻译是杂家知识面对翻译的要求实在是太高了。翻译并不是人家说了什么了，你就怎么翻了。你面对各种各样的人、各行各业的人，听到一个你从未听到过的词汇的可能性实在太高了，机率也太大了。但是，作为翻译，应该做到：不管别人说什么都翻出来。她说，扩大知识面也没有什么好的办法，多看书，多学习。

朱彤给大家讲了几个故事——记得有一次江主席讲了句古文，江主席会见美国客人时说，中国古代科技是很发达的，早在2000年以前，庄子就提出过极限的概念。在中学学习微积分时，他的老师就引用了一段《庄子》的话，说：“一尺之棰，日取其半，万世不竭。”当时我听不懂，就问：“主席，您说什么？”江主席马上很温和地拿笔给我写了下来，解释了一下：“一根一尺长的木棒，每天取一半，不断取下去，永远都不会取完。这是一个极限的概念。”这件事情让我在感激之中体验到了尴尬。在朱总理当副总理的时候，朱彤给他翻译过很多次。她讲到1993年7月以后朱镕基兼任中央银行行长的紧张岁月——那时候，朱总理接触到的多是银行家、金融家等等。每次朱总理总是带着很多问题去提问，自己说得很少。

这时候，朱彤就觉得从英文到中文的翻译很难。只好多看这方面的书来弥补自己。要知道，这样的书是很枯燥的，起初朱彤也看不下去，后来是朱总理的精神感动了她。“朱副总理在当中央银行行长以后，每天晚上回去都要看大量这方面的书。短短两、三年的时间使中国经济实现了‘软着陆’，而且把通货膨胀在最厉害的时候降了下来，并使得格林斯潘这样的金融界大腕都对他五体投地。这正是朱总理值得我们学习的地方——他在那么高的位置上还在不断学习，虽然起步晚，但是能一下子走到很多人前面，这里面的艰辛不用多说，精神更是值得我们学习的？”朱彤在说这些话时，眼中满是敬佩。

李鹏委员长作总理时，比较多地谈到了三峡，讲到发电量时，经常用到千瓦的计量单位，而国际上通用的是兆瓦。这就需要算术知识来进行短时间内的换算。有一次，李总理在和外宾谈到中国的棉花产量时，说到了"万担"这个数量词。这时候，朱彤可不像换算“千瓦”一样游刃有余了，只好向李总理投去困惑的目光。结果，李总理一下子明白，马上拿笔算了起来。

在讲这些故事的时候，讲座现场不时传来笑声和热烈的掌声。

“我这样说着大家可能觉得挺好玩，但实际上我们工作起来是很有压力的，有时挺紧张，”她补充说，“脸皮厚一点能立于不败。”谈到心理素质的重要性，朱彤一下子冒出很多话来。

心理素质对一个人来说太重要了，我见过很多人，成绩非常好、扎实，中英文都很好，但是一到场上就紧张，声音很小。其实，给国家领导人当翻译没有必要太紧张，应该放得开，把自己的位置摆正：我只不过是一个翻译而已。 我作为翻译的职责就是帮助双方很好地沟通，这是我的宗旨。所以不管如何，我会尽我所能很好地做好沟通工作。我不是一个演员，没有人在看我表演。我要想的只是如何翻好，而不是别人是否品头论足。也就是说不能患得患失，不能有私心杂念。

朱彤的讲座在热烈的掌声中结束了。

“朱彤女士，我能和您合张影吗？”一个高个的男生很腼腆地提出了请求。

Quit screwing around and work on your paper不要胡闹了，做你的报告去吧。
这种该作正经事的时候, 却晃来晃去做别的事就是这里的“screw around”的意思。

“Dynamite” 本来是“炸药”的意思，不过口语里面有把它当作形容词“很好”的意思.当然，dynamite还有跟“炸药”有关的意思，也就是“危险的”的意思。好比有一件事是你绝对不应该提起的，否则可能有什么不堪的后果，旁人可能会提醒你 Don't talk about it. It's dynamite.

It is said Buddha (the ultimate Emperor for the whole universe in Chinese legend) once called together all the animals on the earth for an important meeting. Only twelve animals turned up: the rat, the ox, the tiger, the rabbit, the dragon, the snake, the horse, the sheep, the monkey, the rooster, the dog and the pig. The rat, being the smartest, jumped on top of the ox to be the first one to arrive.

As a reward, the Buddha gave each animal a year in the cycle and declared that anyone born in that year would resemble the animal in some way. In addition, each two hours of the day is also governed by one animal. The hours of 11pm to 1:00 am is by Rat, from 1 am to 3 am by Ox and so on. Six elements of the planet: wood, fire, air, water, gold and earth are also integrated into the animal Zodiac signs.

So finally, we get the“the Chinese Zodiac”。
